Garmin Technical Information        By Dale DePriest (www.gpsinformation.org/dale/tech.htm)

This table contains a comparison of the various products in the Garmin handheld GPS line. Instead of building a table entry for each product they have been grouped by family. The older multiplex units are represented by the G-38/G-40/G-45XL and the 12 channel parallel units are represented by the G-12/G-12XL/G48. The original mapping products are shown in the table entry for G-III/GIII+. There are special columns for the emap, etrex lines and 76 family. The etrex has two columns due to the split in the family coverage based on the click stick hardware. There is also some support for an electronic compass and an altimeter with vertical profiling. These are unique features in a few Garmin units. There is no specific coverage in the table for the G-II, the G-II+, the G-III Pilot, the G-12CX, the 12MAP, or the GPS-72. Instead these units are represented as note entries at the bottom of the table. The specifications for other Garmin units may be able to be implied from the table but no guarantee can be made for their applicability. The Rino products have the same gps specifications and features as the Venture and Legend.

Notes:
1. 12CX is a 12XL except it has 2048 tracklog, 3 color display, 1000 waypoints, waypoint maintenance improvements, 35 hour battery life w/battery save, dedicated zoom keys, temperature 5 - 131 F
2. III Pilot is like a III except - no saved logs, no MOB, has Jeppeson database support, HSI compass display, vertical navigation support
3. III and III+ has configurable average speed.
4. 12MAP - A 12CX hardware and case design with audible alarms. Software features and display are the same as a III+ except no display rotation.
5. II is the same specs as other multiplex units except it in a III case design with rotatable display
6. II+ is like a III except no maps and has lower resolution display and much less customization.
7. keypad if used counts as 4 keys but may be used for 8 positions on units without separate keys.
8. Information for final destination available on G12 family and G45 family only on active route screen. Not on a navigation screen. etrex and emap report this on backtrack routes. emap reports this on route page.
9. Etrex, emap reports on the active route screen but, active bactraks show ETE and Dist on main screen. Note that emap, etrex calculates this differently from other units.
10. Etrex summit, vista, 76S contains another screen for vertical profiling. Can be customized to display barometric profiling.
11. Etrex and Emap display some live data on menu screens. Both will display active route data and the emap has a trip screen that displays average speed, max speed, and odometer read outs. The setup screen is the only place on the emap to display time in seconds.
12. Emap and new etrex's computes nearest from cursor position - the others from present position.
13. GPS V - satellite screen, map, compass (position), trip guidance.
14. The European basic etrex is like the USA Camo except for color.
15. Based on the US version, you can buy some units in other languages.
16. The GPS 72 is like the 76 except there is no provision for an external antenna and the screen resolution is 120x160.
17. The Rino products have the same gps specifications and features as the Legend and Venture. Of course physical sizes are different. In addition the Rino product supports waypoint comments of up to 30 characters with a default of the date and time.

All support English/Metric/Nautical units for speed, distance, altitude.
